Looking for El Dorado
Embark on a journey into the past and unveil the mysteries of the search for gold of the Spanish conquerors in the Americas. On this trip, you will visit the Guatavita lagoon, which gave rise to the legend of El Dorado and the Museo del Oro, the museum with the largest pre-Hispanic gold collection in the world, while you learn how these cultures lived. The tour begins when the guide and driver pick you up at your hotel. You will go to the northeast of the capital, driving between the Andean mountains for about 1 hour until you reach the town of Guatavita. After walking through the cobbled streets of the "village of the white houses", you will be driven to the highest point in which is the sacred lagoon hidden between the mountains and the fog. Within this natural reserve of exuberant and humid vegetation unique to the páramo, you will be able to feel the mystical energy that made this lagoon a sacred place for the Muiscas. Know the connection that these native peoples had with nature and the way they used gold as a ritual symbol. At the same time, he knows how this particular ritual aroused the interest of the Spanish and other unfortunate adventurers. You will return to Bogotá through La Calera, a small town famous for its arepas stuffed with artisanal cheese. After a quick stop for a snack, the trip will continue directly to La Candelaria. Here you will go to lunch at a local restaurant (on your own). After lunch, you will walk through the narrow streets of La Candelaria, to reach the last stop: the Gold Museum. In the Museum you will have the opportunity to complement the information and experience of the sacred lagoon. In this guided tour, you will see the most emblematic pieces that archeologists have found in the lake and its surroundings, and in other regions of the country. At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to buy at the handicraft market of Santander Park.
