Itinerary
Día 1
Bogotá City tour + Monserrate + Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá
- On this tour, you will have the best of two tours in one. This city tour is the most effective way to visit the most relevant places in Bogotá in half a day, in addition to having access to an expert guide with extensive historical knowledge of today's Colombia. You will travel 180 meters underground and you will be surprised by a world-class Colombian wonder: a majestic cathedral built within the depths of the largest salt reserve in the world.
- The day will begin when the driver picks you up at your hotel to take you to the first stop: the Sanctuary of Monserrate, located in the imposing Eastern Hills of the city, at an altitude of 3150msnl. You will climb to the top of the mountain in a cable car, where you will reach the most famous pilgrimage point of the city and, perhaps, the most incredible viewpoint of the capital. This is the best place to have an approach to the historical and spatial context of the city.
- Then, you will descend to the picturesque cobbled streets of La Candelaria, to visit the Botero Museum. This place contains some of the works of art by the eccentric artist Fernando Botero, an icon of Colombian contemporary art. You will also stop at the Chorro de Quevedo to appreciate the contrast of the historic center, and thus, better understand the history of Colombia.
- After the walk in La Candelaria, you will arrive at the Plaza de Bolívar, the historical epicenter of the city, where the most important and prestigious administrative and governmental buildings of the country are located.
- To end the tour of the city, you will cross La Candelaria to immerse yourself in the most impressive collection of indigenous gold objects at the Gold Museum. Upon leaving, you will have the opportunity to go shopping at the Santander Park craft market.
- As soon as the city tour ends, you will move to the charming city of Zipaquirá, where you will visit the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. This is a place where the mysticism of the Muiscas (indigenous culture), Catholic symbolism and contemporary engineering came together to take visitors on a magical journey through tunnels and vaults of impressive sizes.
- On this tour, you will enter an old salt mine that was adapted to become a cathedral. Here, artists and sculptors have manipulated the materials found in the basement to create original representations of Catholic symbols. Learn from the hand of an expert guide about this process and the meanings behind the works of art that you will see on the tour.
- Then, you will go to the colonial town of Zipaquirá, where you will walk through the main square that is surrounded by several buildings that have been declared national monuments. Here, you will taste delicious food from the region and visit the local handicraft market. Finally, you will return to Bogotá, where you will be taken to your hotel.
